OVERVIEW: The State Ethics Commission and Notaries Public
In New Mexico, notaries public and other notarial officers are subject to the Revised Uniform Law on Notarial Acts (“RULONA”) NMSA 1978, §§ 14-14A-1 to -32 (effective January 1, 2022). Under RULONA, the State Ethics Commission has authority to take adverse actions against a commission as a notary public for certain misconduct. This page provides information on the Commission’s role in conducting administrative proceedings that could result in an adverse action against a person’s commission as a notary public. Please note that the Commission’s procedures under RULONA differ from the Commission’s adjudication of ethics complaints under the State Ethics Commission Act.
